In the race for the 2019 NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens is the frontrunner. Jackson, the Ravens' quarterback, received an overwhelming majority of the votes, with 45 out of 50 first-place votes when he was named to the Associated Press (AP) NFL All-Pro team earlier this month.
Jackson had an outstanding season, throwing for 3,678 yards and 24 touchdowns. His mobility on the ground was also a significant asset, as he racked up an impressive 821 rushing yards and scored five touchdowns. With Jackson's remarkable performance, the Ravens secured the top seed in the AFC with a 13-4 record.
However, the voting breakdown for the MVP award is shaping up to be interesting, with a late push from Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys. Prescott concluded the season with impressive numbers, amassing 4,516 passing yards and throwing 36 touchdowns, both of which topped the league. He also achieved a career-high passer rating of 105.9, leading the Cowboys to clinch the NFC East title.
Another strong contender for the Offensive Player of the Year (OPOY) award is Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers. McCaffrey proved to be a versatile weapon, leading the NFL in rushing yards with 1,459 and rushing touchdowns with 14. Additionally, he contributed significantly to the passing game, recording 564 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns.
While Lamar Jackson seems poised to secure the MVP award, the OPOY award is not always synonymous with the MVP. In fact, since 2003, only 10 players have won both awards, and it has happened only once since 2016, when Patrick Mahomes claimed both honors in 2018.
The competition for both MVP and OPOY is fierce, with each player displaying exceptional skills and making crucial contributions to their respective teams. The final results of the awards will undoubtedly generate anticipation and excitement among football fans.
