In a surprising turn of events, Kliff Kingsbury has decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the vacant offensive coordinator position with the Las Vegas Raiders. Earlier this week, sources revealed that Kingsbury had been selected as the leading candidate for the role, but according to his agent, Erik Burkhardt, Kingsbury has had a change of heart.
Kingsbury, a highly regarded offensive mind, had reportedly attracted interest from multiple NFL teams during the recent hiring cycle. However, it seems that he has set his sights on a different opportunity. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Kingsbury is now being considered as the leading candidate to become the offensive coordinator for the Commanders. This unexpected development has left the Raiders scrambling to reconsider their options.
The Raiders had also interviewed Luke Getsy, the former offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, as well as Alex Van Pelt, the former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns. Additionally, Mike Sullivan, the quarterbacks coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was also considered for the position. However, Van Pelt has since accepted the offensive coordinator role with the New England Patriots, leaving Getsy and Sullivan as potential alternatives for the Raiders.
Kingsbury previously served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for four seasons. Under his guidance, the Cardinals averaged 23.6 points per game and achieved their best season in 2021, securing an 11-6 record and a postseason berth. Known for his ability to develop quarterbacks, Kingsbury played a pivotal role in the growth of Kyler Murray, the top overall draft pick in 2019, as well as two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes during his college football days at Texas Tech.
While the Raiders may have hoped for Kingsbury's expertise in playcalling for their quarterback in the upcoming 2024 season, it is uncertain who will fill the offensive coordinator position. The team is expected to part ways with veteran signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo and may bring in another quarterback to compete with Aidan O'Connell.
Antonio Pierce, the interim head coach of the Raiders, expressed his desire for the new offensive coordinator to be a "teacher" and prioritize the team's vertical passing game and explosive plays. The Raiders' goal is to recapture the success they had when playing at their best.
Bo Hardegree had been serving as the team's interim offensive coordinator since the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels in late October. However, with Kingsbury's withdrawal, the Raiders are faced with the task of finding a suitable replacement who can steer their offense in the right direction.
As the search for an offensive coordinator continues, the Raiders will need to act swiftly to ensure they have the right coaching staff in place for the upcoming season. Time is of the essence, as they aim to maximize the potential of their offensive unit and return to winning ways.
