In a surprising turn of events, Kliff Kingsbury has withdrawn his name from consideration to be the next offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. According to his agent, via ESPN, Kingsbury has decided to explore other opportunities instead. This decision comes as a shock, considering it was previously believed that he would be joining the Raiders.
However, the Raiders wasted no time in finding a potential replacement for the OC role. Sports Illustrated reports that the team is nearing a deal with Luke Getsy, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. Getsy had already impressed the Raiders during the initial interview process, making him a strong candidate for the position, as per ESPN.
While the Raiders were considering other candidates, such as Eric Bieniemy and Pep Hamilton, it seems that Getsy has emerged as the frontrunner. Bieniemy, who was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Commanders, and Hamilton, who held the role with the Houston Texans in 2022, were also reportedly in talks with the Raiders.
Interestingly, Kingsbury is now being discussed as a potential offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. ESPN reports that Kingsbury is one of the leading candidates for the job, highlighting his desirability in the coaching market.
Looking back at Getsy's tenure with the Chicago Bears, the team averaged 21.2 points per game during his two seasons as the play-caller. They also excelled in the running game, ranking second in rushing yards per game (141.1) and third in run percentage (48.7%) across the league.
The Raiders had interviewed other notable names for the OC position, including current UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. NFL Media reveals that Kelly was interviewed at least twice by the Raiders, indicating their interest in him. However, Kingsbury was reportedly their top target.
Kingsbury, who served as an offensive analyst at USC this past season, was fired by the Arizona Cardinals in January last year. Although he had a winning record with the Cardinals, making the playoffs in 2021, the team struggled in 2022, finishing last in their division with a 4-13 record.
As for the Raiders, they had a lackluster offensive performance in the previous season, ranking sixth-worst in yards per game (289.5) and 10th-worst in points per game (19.5). The hiring of Getsy or any other OC will be crucial in revitalizing the team's offensive playbook.
With a number of uncertainties surrounding the Raiders this offseason, including the starting quarterback and the future of running back Josh Jacobs, the team is focused on finalizing their next offensive coordinator appointment. The Raiders are keen on making the right hire to kickstart their offense and improve on last season's lackluster results.
As the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see how the Raiders' offensive staff shapes up and how they intend to address their offensive woes from last year.
