In a move that initially flew under the radar, the Los Angeles Rams acquired guard Kevin Dotson from the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the regular season. With the Rams' history of taking chances on AFC North draft picks, the trade seemed like another low-risk move. However, Dotson's early performance has exceeded expectations and he is already making a significant impact on the team.

Dotson, who had been a starting level guard in Pittsburgh, brought a solid pass-blocking grade to the Rams with his 77.6 rating. His 16 pressures allowed also showcased his ability to protect the quarterback. While depth was a factor in the trade, Dotson's potential as a starter was evident.

The opportunity for Dotson to prove himself came in Week 4 when he started at right guard against the Indianapolis Colts. His impact in the run game, rather than his usual forte in pass protection, was immediately felt. Dotson finished the week with the third-highest run-blocking grade, proving his versatility and effectiveness on the field.

Since taking over as the starter, Dotson has solidified his position and showcased his skills. In the three weeks since he became the starter, he has only allowed three pressures, compared to the combined 12 pressures allowed by the previous guards in Weeks 1-3. His consistent performance has earned him recognition as the second-highest graded offensive lineman overall, according to Pro Football Focus.

Dotson's presence has particularly revitalized the Rams' run game, where he has been a perfect fit in the team's blocking scheme. Running back Kyren Williams has flourished with Dotson in front of him, averaging an impressive 12.5 yards per carry when running behind him. Dotson's impact is growing week by week, allowing head coach Sean McVay to have more confidence in calling run plays in his direction.

The offensive line as a whole has also improved with Dotson in the lineup. The Rams' offensive line groupings featuring Dotson have averaged 0.16 and 0.09 EPA per play, ranking among the most efficient in the league. This improvement is a result of better communication and chemistry among the linemen, exemplified by pivotal plays such as Dotson successfully passing off defenders to his teammates.

The Rams offensive line, which previously seemed in need of a complete overhaul, has now found a missing piece in Dotson. His consistent performance has expedited the rebuilding process and has provided stability to the line. With Dotson's strong start, the Rams front office will have to seriously consider bringing him back on an extension if he continues to play at his current level.

Although it's still early in Dotson's tenure with the Rams, his impact has been undeniable. His impressive play has not only secured his starting position but has also propelled the entire offensive line to a higher level. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Dotson as he continues to solidify his role as a key contributor to the Rams' success.
