In a season filled with ups and downs, the Kentucky Wildcats have found their rhythm on offense thanks to the return of offensive coordinator Liam Coen and the dynamic play of running back Ray Davis. After a disappointing 2022 campaign, Kentucky has witnessed a remarkable improvement, increasing their scoring by a staggering 10 points per game in 2023.
Liam Coen, who previously worked with Kentucky before his stint as the offensive coordinator for the L.A. Rams in the NFL, made a surprising return to his old position. Coen's modern version of a pro-style offense has breathed new life into Kentucky's attack. The rushing game, featuring pulling linemen and power blocking, has been instrumental in their offensive success. Meanwhile, the passing game has thrived with tight splits, play-action plays, pump fakes, and double moves, primarily targeting the intermediate distances.
Although NC State transfer QB Devin Leary hasn't met some of the high expectations set for him, he has still proven to be a reliable and solid quarterback. Known for executing play-action passes and runs with finesse, Leary excels at using his eyes to deceive defensive backs and create opportunities for his receivers. Despite a completion rate of 57%, Leary has showcased his incredible arm talent, attention to detail, and football intelligence. Some of his incomplete passes can be attributed to the lack of synchronization with the UK receivers, as well as his willingness to attempt throws to tightly covered receivers.
Kentucky's receiving trio of Barion Brown, Tayvion Robinson, and Dane Key have been reliable targets for Leary, with each player accumulating roughly 30 receptions and 350-450 receiving yards. Their collective impact on the field ensures that the Wildcats' passing game remains potent on any given play.
However, the true catalyst for Kentucky's offensive resurgence has been the arrival of running back Ray Davis. Previously a standout player for a struggling Vanderbilt team, Davis transferred to Kentucky and has become the heart and soul of their rushing attack. With an impressive 903 rushing yards so far this season, averaging 6.1 yards per carry, Davis has showcased his exceptional skills as both a rusher and a pass-catcher, amassing an additional 227 yards through the air. Furthermore, he has accounted for an impressive 14 total touchdowns, making him the SEC's second-leading rusher behind Missouri's Cody Schrader.
As the Wildcats prepare to face the formidable Alabama Crimson Tide, led by Head Coach Nick Saban and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, they will face a stern test. Alabama's defensive backs are renowned for their tenacity and skill, posing a challenge for Leary and his receivers to penetrate the centerfield zones. Although Kentucky may manage to move the chains with Davis, it remains to be seen if they can consistently exploit Alabama's strong defensive backs.
Therefore, it is predicted that Kentucky may only score 17 points in this matchup. The Wildcats' offensive success will likely hinge on executing one or two well-timed double moves for touchdowns. Alabama's defensive backs hold a distinct advantage over Kentucky's receivers, making it an uphill battle for the Wildcats to fully capitalize on their passing offense.
Despite the challenges they may face, Kentucky's offensive revival under the guidance of Liam Coen and the exceptional performances by Ray Davis does bode well for their future. The Wildcats have turned over a new leaf in 2023, demonstrating their capability to compete at a higher level and setting the stage for an exciting and promising season.
