In an interview with reporters on Tuesday morning, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave updates on the playing status of three key players as the team prepares for Sunday's Super Bowl LVIII showdown against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
The first player in question is wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who has been dealing with a hip injury and has missed the last six games. Reid was noncommittal regarding Toney's availability, stating, "Yeah, we'll see how that goes. He's been practicing. We'll just see whether he's up or not." Toney's listing on the injury report for every game this season raises concerns about his potential participation in the upcoming Super Bowl.
Another player facing uncertainty is running back Jerick McKinnon, who was placed on the Reserve/Injured list in late December due to a core muscle injury. It was initially assumed that McKinnon would miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on January 2. However, there is a glimmer of hope as McKinnon was designated to return from Reserve/Injured on Saturday. Despite this positive development, Reid downplayed the chances of McKinnon taking the field, stating, "Jerick is not practicing. I tell you, it's slim for him to be out there."
The third player in question is left guard Joe Thuney, who suffered a pectoral muscle injury during the Divisional Round victory over the Buffalo Bills two weeks ago. Reid informed the media that the team is closely monitoring Thuney's progress, particularly his strength and the risk of exacerbating his injury. Expressing doubts about Thuney's availability, Reid remarked, "We'll see. I mean, I think it's a long shot."
Chiefs' fans eagerly await the Super Bowl Week's first injury report, set to be released on Wednesday. The report will shed light on the official statuses of Toney, McKinnon, and Thuney, providing crucial information for the team's preparation for the highly anticipated championship game.
As the Chiefs' Super Bowl LVIII preparations intensify, the status of these key players will remain a topic of concern and speculation, adding an extra layer of suspense to the impending clash on Sunday.
