HOUSTON -- Joe Espada, former bench coach of the Houston Astros, has been promoted to the position of manager, taking over from retired manager Dusty Baker. The 48-year-old Espada, who hails from Puerto Rico, expressed his gratitude and excitement during his introduction as the new leader of the Astros.

Espada's journey to becoming a manager has been a long and arduous one. He had previously interviewed for several managerial positions without success. However, when Baker announced his retirement, Espada had a renewed hope that he would finally get the chance to lead the team he loves.

"I really hoped that I was going to get a chance to stay home and manage this team," Espada said. "I love this city. I love this team. I love this community and I know I can protect and continue success and continue winning in this city."

Houston Astros fans have reason to be optimistic about Espada's appointment. Under his guidance as bench coach since 2018, the team has reached impressive heights, including seven consecutive appearances in the American League Championship Series and winning the World Series in 2022.

"I was looking for someone with leadership skills, someone who could communicate, someone who would collaborate and ultimately someone who was humble," said general manager Dana Brown. "I've had a chance to talk to Joe Espada almost the whole year and we've had great conversations, we hit it off early and I think, without a question, Joe is a good fit for this job."

Espada's coaching career began with the Miami Marlins organization, where he worked his way up from the minors to become the team's third base coach in 2010. He later joined the New York Yankees as a special assistant to the general manager, before transitioning to the coaching staff as the infield and third base coach.

Known for his strong relationships with players and effective communication skills, Espada is poised to bring a fresh perspective and a winning mentality to the Astros. "Communication with these players is very important, empower them to have a say in the process," he emphasized. "I've seen this team win a lot of games and I know what it takes to win. I know how to push these players and when to push them, and I think it matters."

With the appointment of Espada as the Astros' manager, the team is looking forward to continuing their success and delivering for their dedicated fans. Espada wasted no time and announced that he will immediately start building his coaching staff to ensure a seamless transition and maintain the team's winning culture.

Astros fans can rest assured that their beloved team is in capable hands as they embark on a new chapter under Joe Espada's leadership.
