JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence recently found himself under scrutiny after opting to walk off the field despite the team having a cart available to transport him following an ankle injury during Monday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Lawrence clarified on Wednesday that he had considered using the cart but ultimately decided to walk with assistance to the EverBank Stadium locker room and X-ray facility. He explained that he felt it would be quicker for him to reach the necessary facilities on his own rather than waiting for the cart to navigate through the equipment on the field. However, he admitted to having some regret over his decision.

During a press conference, Lawrence expressed his surprise at the criticism, stating that the Jaguars indeed had a cart available for injured players. He emphasized that his choice to walk off the field was a personal decision and should not be interpreted as a reflection of the team's preparedness. Lawrence dismissed the notion that the Jaguars would not provide necessary medical resources for their players, expressing confidence in the team's staff and facilities.

The footage of Lawrence being assisted by staff members as he walked through the tunnel and hallway of EverBank Stadium drew widespread criticism on social media, television, and radio. However, Jaguars punter Logan Cooke defended the team on social media and confronted one of the prominent critics.

Despite the initial concerns, Lawrence provided an update on his ankle on Wednesday, stating that it feels better than expected just two days after suffering a high ankle sprain. The injury occurred when left tackle Walker Little inadvertently stepped on Lawrence's foot, causing his ankle to become trapped beneath him when he fell.

Lawrence expressed satisfaction with his rehabilitation progress thus far and stated his hope of being cleared to play in the upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. He acknowledged the importance of taking one day at a time and ensuring he doesn't aggravate or worsen the injury while working towards a return to the field.

There is precedent for a player returning to competition one week after a high ankle sprain, as evidenced by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who started the 2022 AFC Championship Game eight days after suffering a similar injury against the Jaguars. Nevertheless, Lawrence faces additional challenges, as the Jaguars will be missing their top wide receiver, Christian Kirk, due to a groin injury, and could potentially be starting their third left tackle if Walker Little is unable to play due to a hamstring issue.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson emphasized that Lawrence's playing time will only be considered if there is no risk of further injury to his right ankle. The team's current position in the division race and the fight for playoff seeding will not influence the decision. Pederson emphasized the importance of protecting players and ensuring their return to the field is not at the cost of jeopardizing their long-term health.

In the event that Lawrence is unable to play, backup quarterback C.J. Beathard is prepared to step in and start against the Cleveland Browns. However, Beathard himself is dealing with an injury to his left non-throwing shoulder, limiting his participation in practice on Wednesday. He sustained the injury when he fell on the shoulder after a scramble in Monday's game.

As the Jaguars prepare for their upcoming matchup, the team remains focused on Lawrence's recovery and making decisions that prioritize his long-term well-being while navigating their division race and pursuit of a playoff spot.
