The Texas Rangers have suffered a significant setback in the World Series as stars Adolis García and Max Scherzer have been ruled out of the remainder of the series due to injuries sustained in Game 3. The Major League Baseball (MLB) announced on Tuesday night, just before Game 4, that roster substitutions had been approved for both players. In their absence, infielder/outfielder Ezequiel Duran and relief pitcher Brock Burke will take their place on the roster.
García, the Rangers' standout player throughout the postseason, is dealing with a left oblique strain that forced him to miss Game 4. Rangers general manager Chris Young confirmed the news, stating that the injury is significant enough to necessitate a stint on the injured list during the regular season. Despite attempting to give it a go in the batting cage, García's pain was evident, making it clear that he needed time to recover.
On the other hand, Scherzer's absence is a disappointment for the Rangers, particularly in the potential Game 7 scenario. The three-time Cy Young winner won't be available to pitch and will be sorely missed. Manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, highlighting the caliber of the two injured players.
The loss of García is cause for more immediate concern for the Rangers, given his contributions on both offense and defense throughout the postseason. His absence will be felt in the lineup, where his impressive bat, arm, and leadership have been invaluable. Meanwhile, Scherzer's absence will not impact the pitching rotation until a potential Game 7.
In Game 4, Travis Jankowski was selected to replace García in right field. Jankowski, known for his limited action during the regular season, will step up to fill the void. Despite his lack of playing time, Jankowski has shown promise with a.263 batting average, .357 on-base percentage, .689 slugging percentage, and one home run with 30 RBI. He enters Game 4 with one hit in two plate appearances during the postseason.
García's injury occurred in the eighth inning of Game 3 when he felt tightness in his left side after swinging on a flyout to deep center field. Unfortunately, he did not return to his defensive position, but the Rangers managed to secure a 3-1 victory, taking a 2-1 series lead.
García's outstanding performance in the postseason cannot be understated. The two-time All-Star was named the ALCS MVP after hitting home runs in four consecutive games against the Houston Astros in the seven-game series. In fact, García's five home runs in the series, including two in the Game 7 clincher, set a new MLB record for a single postseason series. He continued his impressive run by hitting a walk-off home run in the 11th inning of Game 1 of the World Series, leading the Rangers to a thrilling 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks.
With García and Scherzer sidelined, the Rangers will need to adjust their strategies and rely on their depth to secure victory in the remaining games of the World Series. The team must rally together and overcome this unexpected setback as they strive for championship glory.
