Former New England Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley is set to interview for the offensive coordinator role on the Patriots' coaching staff, according to ESPN. Caley, who most recently served as the Los Angeles Rams' tight ends coach under Sean McVay, will potentially reunite with Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo.
Having spent eight seasons with the Patriots, Caley brings a wealth of experience to the table. He initially joined the team as an offensive coaching assistant and eventually took on the role of tight ends coach for six seasons. During his tenure, Caley was part of two Super Bowl-winning campaigns.
Caley has been previously considered for offensive coordinator positions, having interviewed with the New York Jets and Houston Texans last year. Ultimately, he was hired by McVay in Los Angeles, where he became well-versed in McVay's West Coast-style offense.
The departure of Bill O'Brien, who held the position of offensive coordinator last season, created a vacancy that Mayo is now looking to fill. Mayo, who was recently introduced as the Patriots' 15th head coach, has already conducted interviews for the defensive coordinator and special teams coach positions.
With rumors swirling that former head coach Bill Belichick may be moving on to another job, it is expected that several coaches from the Patriots' staff may follow suit. This means that the team's coaching staff is likely to undergo some changes.
As the search for a new offensive coordinator continues, Caley's interview presents an opportunity for him to return to the Patriots organization in a different capacity. Mayo will be looking to assemble a strong coaching team as the Patriots prepare for the upcoming season.
The Patriots' coaching staff could see some fresh faces, but with Caley potentially rejoining the team, there will also be a familiar presence to help guide the offense towards success.
