In their search for a new offensive coordinator, the New England Patriots have set their sights on a familiar face. Nick Caley, the tight ends coach for the Los Angeles Rams and a former assistant for the Patriots, is scheduled to interview with his ex-team on Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Caley, 40, brings with him a wealth of coaching experience. He began his career as a student assistant at John Carroll University before moving on to work at prestigious collegiate programs such as Auburn and Arkansas. In 2015, Caley made the leap to the NFL, joining the Patriots as an offensive assistant.
Over the course of his two years in New England, Caley quickly rose through the ranks, eventually being named the team's tight ends coach in 2017. He held this position for six seasons, overseeing the development of the Patriots' tight end group. However, he left the team in the spring of 2023 after being passed over for the offensive coordinator role, which was given to Bill O'Brien.
Under the guidance of Rams head coach Sean McVay, Caley has had success coaching the tight end group in Los Angeles. Last season, his players combined for 62 receptions, 668 receiving yards, and three touchdowns.
With O'Brien's departure from the Patriots after a disappointing season, and the team undergoing a rebuilding process following a change at head coach, there may be an opportunity for Caley to make a return. He is the first known candidate to interview for the vacant offensive coordinator position, according to reports.
Caley's name adds to the growing list of assistant coaches linked to the Patriots this offseason, bringing the total to eight as the team looks to rebuild their coaching staff.
As the interview process gets underway, it remains to be seen if Caley's previous experience with the Patriots will give him an edge in securing the coveted offensive coordinator role. Patriots fans will be eagerly watching as the team continues its search for the individual who will shape their offense in the seasons to come.
