Former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry wasted no time finding a new home in the NFL. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Barry has joined the Miami Dolphins' coaching staff as the linebackers coach and run-game coordinator, under the leadership of new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.
Barry, 53, brings a wealth of experience to the Dolphins' coaching staff. He began his NFL coaching career in 2000 as the San Francisco 49ers' defensive quality control coach and later served as the linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he earned a Super Bowl ring. Most recently, Barry was the assistant head coach and linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Rams before taking on the role of Packers defensive coordinator in 2021.
However, after leading one of the league's weakest rush defenses over the past few seasons, Barry was relieved of his duties in Green Bay on January 24th, 2024. The Packers allowed an average of 4.7 yards per carry during Barry's three-year tenure, just slightly lower than the Los Angeles Chargers' league-leading mark of 4.8 yards per carry during the same period.
Despite some concerns arising from his recent stint with the Packers, there is optimism surrounding Barry's addition to the Dolphins' coaching staff. His previous experience as a defensive coordinator will provide valuable insight to Weaver as they work together to improve Miami's defense.
In addition, Barry's reputation as a proficient linebackers coach and player developer has garnered excitement among Dolphins fans. With his history of nurturing young talent, there is hope that he can bring out the best in promising players like Channing Tindall and others on the roster.
Barry's hiring also signals the end of Anthony Campanile's chances of becoming Miami's defensive coordinator. Campanile will now seek opportunities on other coaching staffs in need of a linebackers coach.
As Barry settles into his new role, the Dolphins will look to free agency and the upcoming draft to further bolster their linebacker group. Fans and experts alike are eager to see which linebackers the team will target and how Barry's influence will shape their development.
The addition of Joe Barry to the Miami Dolphins' coaching staff brings a mix of experience, expertise, and a proven track record of developing players. Dolphins fans will be eagerly watching to see how Barry helps transform the defense and maximize the potential of the team's linebackers in the upcoming season.
