In a surprising move, former New York Jets running back Dalvin Cook has signed with the Baltimore Ravens just days after being waived by his former team. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Cook struck a deal with the Ravens on Thursday afternoon and will join them in time for the playoffs.
The Jets had signed Cook during the offseason to a one-year, $7 million contract, but his time in New York was marred by struggles on the field. The 28-year-old rushed for just 214 yards on 67 carries, both career lows, and failed to score a touchdown for the first time in his career.
Despite his disappointing stint with the Jets, Cook now has the opportunity to pursue a Super Bowl appearance with the Ravens. Baltimore secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC, giving them a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. Cook's addition is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the Ravens' ground game, which is often led by quarterback Lamar Jackson. Currently, Gus Edwards is the team's leading rusher outside of Jackson, having gained 762 yards and scored 13 touchdowns on 188 carries.
Cook's contract with the Jets was reportedly forfeited when he was waived, but now he has the chance to make an impact on a successful playoff team. Although he won't play in the Ravens' regular-season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the running back will be with the team as they gear up for their first playoff game in a little over two weeks.
The Ravens' decision to bring in Dalvin Cook demonstrates their commitment to strengthening their roster and making a serious run at the Super Bowl. It remains to be seen how Cook will perform in Baltimore, but fans are hopeful that his skills will shine through and help propel the team deeper into the playoffs.
