In a shocking twist of events, former Houston Rockets guard, Kevin Porter Jr., admitted on Tuesday to assaulting his ex-girlfriend during a fight that took place in their New York City hotel room. The 23-year-old basketball player pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and harassment charges, which will help him avoid jail time.
The incident in question occurred on September 11, 2023, between Porter and former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick. Porter's holdout with Manhattan prosecutors finally came to an end as he decided to accept the plea deal. As part of the agreement, he is required to complete a 26-week counseling program and adhere to a limited restraining order.
During the hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court, Assistant District Attorney Mirah Curzer revealed that if Porter successfully completes the counseling program and stays out of trouble for a year, he will have the opportunity to withdraw his plea to the assault charge, instead facing only harassment, which is considered a violation.
Porter was released by the Rockets following the domestic violence allegations, leaving a significant impact on his basketball career. His attorney, Phillip Jobe, stated that Porter is eager to put this incident behind him and move forward. "The resolution will allow Mr. Porter to put this incident, which involved false felony allegations and false facts, behind him with no criminal record and move forward," Jobe said.
According to the initial criminal complaint, Porter allegedly punched Gondrezick multiple times in the face and choked her to the point where she couldn't breathe during the altercation that took place at the Millennium Hilton New York Hotel in Times Square. Gondrezick managed to escape the hotel room and was discovered injured by hotel staff.
Initially facing serious charges, including strangulation, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment, one of the assault charges against Porter was dropped. The prosecutors acknowledged that his ex-girlfriend's neck was not broken in the fight.
In an interview with The Post, Gondrezick disputed the claims made by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the police, stating that her injuries did not align with what was being alleged. She denied being punched in the face multiple times and emphasized that Porter did not strike her. Gondrezick expressed her disappointment with the handling of the case.
This incident has undoubtedly marked a downfall in Porter's NBA career, as he was traded by the Rockets to the Thunder, who immediately waived him following the discovery of the abuse allegations.
As Porter looks towards the future, he must navigate the consequences of his actions and work towards rehabilitation while attempting to rebuild his professional career.
