Former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Arthur Smith, is pursuing a return to his old role as an offensive coordinator. According to reports from Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Smith is set to interview for the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator position on Sunday.
After a series of disappointing seasons with the Falcons, Smith was fired earlier this month, marking the end of three consecutive 7-10 seasons. Prior to his head coaching stint, Smith served as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and 2020. He had initially joined the Titans as the team's tight ends coach before working his way up the coaching ladder.
During his tenure as the Titans' offensive coordinator, Smith achieved notable success. In the 2020 season, Tennessee finished second in points scored and fourth in total yards. However, Smith was unable to replicate the same level of success with the Falcons.
The Steelers, on the other hand, made a mid-season change at offensive coordinator, firing Matt Canada. Following Canada's dismissal, running backs coach Eddie Faulkner and quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan shared the responsibilities for the remainder of the season. Head coach Mike Tomlin expressed his intention to seek an external candidate for the offensive coordinator position for the 2024 season, which has prompted Sullivan to explore opportunities elsewhere.
In an update later in the day, the Steelers officially announced Smith's interview for the offensive coordinator role. The interview could prove to be a significant step in Smith's quest to reestablish himself as a successful offensive coordinator in the NFL.
As the Steelers continue their search for the right candidate, it remains to be seen if Smith's previous experience and success with the Titans will be enough to secure him the job. The offensive coordinator position holds immense importance as the team looks to bounce back from a challenging season and regain their offensive prowess.
With Smith being a serious contender for the position, fans and analysts alike will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of the interview and the subsequent decision made by the Pittsburgh Steelers organization.
