In a shocking turn of events, five NHL players are facing charges following the reopening of a sexual assault investigation that initially concluded without charges being laid. The London Police Service's comprehensive review, initiated on July 20, 2022, uncovered new evidence, leading to the filing of charges, as announced by London Police Chief Thai Truong on Monday.

During a press conference streamed on the London police's YouTube channel, Chief Truong expressed his "sincerest apology" to the woman who was allegedly assaulted and commended her courage and strength throughout the process. While the details of the case cannot be discussed due to the ongoing legal proceedings, Chief Truong assured that more information will be provided in due course.

The individuals facing charges have been identified as Carter Hart, a goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers, along with Dube, McLeod, Foote, and Formenton. Hart, who last appeared in a game for the Flyers on January 20 and is currently on an indefinite leave of absence, has been granted privacy during this time.

The London Police Service emphasized that the presumption of innocence until proven guilty is a fundamental principle of the justice system and should apply to the accused players. However, their primary focus remains on supporting the victim and upholding the integrity of the criminal trial process.

The NHL, which opened its own investigation in May 2022, has been in collaboration with the London Police Service throughout their inquiries. The league's commissioner, Gary Bettman, acknowledged that their investigators have reviewed substantial amounts of information and conducted interviews with relevant individuals. While they have refrained from interfering or influencing the ongoing judicial proceedings, they will respond appropriately once the outcomes of the investigations are made public.

Hockey Canada also stated their full cooperation with the London Police Service's investigation and their commitment to supporting the legal process.

The charges against these NHL players are an alarming development that has sent shockwaves through the hockey community. As the legal proceedings unfold, the public and hockey fans alike will be eagerly awaiting further updates on this deeply troubling matter.

It should be noted that Carter Hart's contractual situation adds complexity to the situation, as he is set to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season.

As the legal process continues, it is essential to respect the privacy and dignity of the alleged victim, E.M., who showed immense courage by coming forward and participating in the criminal justice system.
