Philadelphia, PA - In a blow to the Philadelphia Eagles' offense, tight end Dallas Goedert is set to undergo surgery after suffering a fractured forearm. The injury occurred during the team's recent victory, as reported by ESPN's Tim McManus.
Goedert, 28, will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the full extent of the injury. However, it is anticipated that he will miss a significant amount of playing time. There is a possibility that Goedert will be placed on injured reserve, resulting in a mandatory minimum absence of four weeks.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport shared that Goedert's surgery could take place as early as today, with an expected recovery timeline of approximately one month. This setback comes after Goedert endured a shoulder injury around the same time last season, which caused him to miss five games.
The impact of Goedert's absence was evident in the Eagles' offense during his previous injury. The team's production at the tight end position declined significantly, highlighting Goedert's vital role in their passing attack. Despite missing time in 2022, the South Dakota State alum recorded an impressive 702 yards and three touchdowns, building upon his career-best 830 yards from the prior season.
Throughout the 2023 season, Goedert has continued to be a reliable contributor for the defending NFC champions. So far, he has accumulated 410 yards and two touchdowns on 38 receptions in nine games. While Philadelphia still boasts a strong ground game and talented wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, the absence of Goedert will undoubtedly be felt following the team's Week 10 bye.
In Goedert's absence, the Eagles have several options to fill the starting tight end role. Jack Stoll, who played the most snaps at the position after Goedert's injury, will likely see an increased workload. Additionally, offseason trade acquisition Albert Okwuegbunam is expected to be in the mix for increased playing time. Grant Calcaterra, who missed the Week 9 win due to a concussion, is expected to return for Philadelphia's next contest after the bye week.
As the Eagles make adjustments to their tight end depth chart, they will be faced with the challenge of maintaining their offensive efficiency without Goedert's contributions. The upcoming weeks will reveal how the team organizes their tight end room in the absence of their top player at the position.
