In a bid to fill their defensive coordinator opening, the Miami Dolphins will be interviewing a coach with a familiar last name to the team's fans. Chris Shula, the Rams linebackers coach and pass rush coordinator, is set to interview with the Dolphins on Thursday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.
What makes the name Shula resonate particularly with Miami fans is the fact that Chris Shula's grandfather is none other than Don Shula. Don Shula is a legendary figure in Miami football history, having won two Super Bowls and five AFC championships during his tenure as the head coach of the Dolphins.
Chris Shula's connections to the Dolphins do not end there. He was actually a college teammate of Sean McVay, the current head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. When McVay took over the Rams in 2017, Shula joined him as a coach. For the most part, Shula has focused on coaching linebackers, but he did have a one-year stint working with the defensive backs.
With the Dolphins parting ways with Vic Fangio last month, several other candidates have emerged for the defensive coordinator position. These include Texans linebackers coach Chris Kiffin, former Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Slowik, and Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile.
The Dolphins organization is undoubtedly intrigued by the prospect of bringing in someone with the Shula name and lineage to help strengthen their defense. However, only time will tell if Chris Shula is the right fit for the team as they continue their search for a new defensive coordinator.
