PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced Joe Mantiply as the starting pitcher for Game 4 of the World Series against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday at Chase Field, according to Arizona Sports.
With the series tied at 2-2, Arizona has decided to roll with a bullpen game for Game 4, following starts by Brandon Pfaadt in Game 3 and the probable starter for Game 5, Zac Gallen.
On the other side, Texas will be handing the ball to left-hander Andrew Heaney, who pitched briefly in Game 2, allowing one hit in a 9-1 victory for the diamondbacks.
In a bullpen game strategy, the Diamondbacks received 5.1 innings from Pfaadt in Game 3, while the combination of Miguel Castro, Kyle Nelson, Luis Frias, and Andrew Saalfrank held the Rangers scoreless for 3.2 frames.
The decision to go with a bullpen game proved successful for the Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the NLCS. Mantiply took the mound as the starter that day, facing a tough lineup that included the likes of Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper from the Philadelphia Phillies. He will now face the challenge of Corey Seager from the Texas Rangers, who has already hit two crucial home runs in this series.
In the previous bullpen game, the Diamondbacks turned to Frias, Nelson, Castro, Saalfrank, Thompson, Ginkel, and Sewald for the save, strategically utilizing their bullpen arms based on matchups.
The Diamondbacks also have Ryne Nelson, a regular-season starter, available for longer outings if needed. However, his two postseason appearances so far have not gone smoothly, allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs in just 1.0 inning pitched.
On the other side, the Rangers faced a setback in Game 3 when starting pitcher Max Scherzer left the game early due to back tightness. This forced a change in their pitching plans, with Jon Gray stepping in and throwing three scoreless innings to save the bullpen. However, Gray was initially expected to start Game 4, and Heaney was brought in as a result of the unforeseen circumstances.
Heaney had a 4.15 ERA during the regular season and previously faced the Diamondbacks in May, giving up six earned runs in 4.2 innings.
The Rangers will be without their star outfielder, Adolis Garcia, in Game 4 due to an oblique strain. Garcia's absence could impact the outlook of the lineup, with Evan Carter potentially moving up in the batting order.
In the meantime, the Diamondbacks will be hoping for a strong performance from Mantiply, who has pitched 6.1 innings this postseason. Although he allowed three earned runs in one outing, he delivered scoreless frames in his start and in Game 1 against the Rangers.
As the World Series continues to unfold, the Diamondbacks will rely on their bullpen depth and Mantiply's ability to handle a formidable Rangers lineup. The outcome of Game 4 will heavily influence the direction of the series as both teams aim to gain the upper hand.
