In the lead-up to the NFC Wild Card game against the Los Angeles Rams, the Detroit Lions are closely monitoring the injury status of rookie tight end, Sam LaPorta. Despite suffering a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise in the team's regular season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, there is optimism surrounding LaPorta's potential to play on Sunday night.

Lions' coach Dan Campbell provided updates on LaPorta's progress, stating that the rookie is showing signs of improvement. LaPorta was even able to participate in the team's walkthrough session. However, the team acknowledges that a clearer picture of his availability will only be available on Friday afternoon. The coaching staff plans to gradually increase his involvement in practice each day.

Initially, reports indicated that LaPorta would likely miss at least a game or two due to his injury. However, Campbell has left open the possibility of LaPorta's participation in the upcoming playoff game against the Rams. Following the Vikings game, the team received more positive news regarding LaPorta's recovery, prompting optimism from the coaching staff. On Monday, Campbell went as far as stating that the rookie tight end has an "outside shot" at playing this week.

LaPorta's presence has been significant for the Lions' offense this season. He has proven himself as a versatile weapon, ranking second on the team in both receptions (86) and receiving yards (889). Additionally, he has tied for the most receiving touchdowns (10). Beyond his receiving abilities, LaPorta also plays a crucial role in the team's run blocking and pass protection plans. His contribution is underscored by the fact that only a select few, including quarterback Jared Goff and offensive linemen, have played more offensive snaps than LaPorta.

While it remains uncertain how LaPorta's knee needs to feel for him to be cleared for Sunday's game, Coach Campbell emphasized the importance of his ability to contribute. If the team believes that LaPorta cannot provide significant assistance, then he might be held out from participating in the game.

The Lions' first practice of the week is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, where LaPorta's level of involvement will be closely observed. The team eagerly awaits further updates on his condition as they prepare for the playoff showdown with the Rams.
