Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell delivered disappointing news to fans on Friday morning, confirming that Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow is expected to be sidelined for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears. Ragnow suffered a knee injury in the team's previous matchup against the New Orleans Saints and did not return to the game.
Campbell acknowledged Ragnow's absence during a press conference, stating, "Yeah, I don't see him going. I don't see him going, but he is improving. He's getting better, he's getting better. So, yeah, I don't see him going."
While initial concerns surrounding Ragnow's knee injury were high, subsequent tests conducted this week revealed a more optimistic outlook. Campbell emphasized the positive news, saying, "I feel like more than anything, we got good news."
In Ragnow's absence, veteran offensive lineman Graham Glasgow will assume the center position. Glasgow has already showcased his capabilities in this role, having amassed 124 snaps at center throughout the season, including the team's Week 8 victory over the Raiders, where the Lions rushed for an impressive 222 yards.
However, with Glasgow moving to center, the Lions face a decision regarding the right guard position. One potential option is rookie Colby Sorsdal, who took on the role during last week's game. Despite experiencing ups and downs this season, Sorsdal has garnered praise from offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who expressed confidence in the young player's growth and development.
Reflecting on Sorsdal's progress, Campbell stated, "To see where he's grown from those early reps and playing interior both right side and left side, he continues to get better each week. Is it perfect? No, but for a rookie, this is learning on the fly a little bit. And he, as well as all of our other young guys, they just continue to get better with reps, and that's what he needs."
Sorsdal's previous start against the Chicago Bears saw him playing left guard, where he faced formidable pressure. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), he was credited with allowing four pressures and earned an overall grade of 45.4.
As the Detroit Lions prepare to face the Chicago Bears without their Pro Bowl center, fans eagerly anticipate the performance of Graham Glasgow at center and the potential impact of rookie Colby Sorsdal filling in at right guard. The team remains focused on player development and improvement as they navigate the challenges presented by Ragnow's absence.
