In a significant setback for the Detroit Lions, the team's prized offensive line has been struck with yet another injury. Left guard Jonah Jackson recently underwent knee surgery to repair a slight tear in his meniscus, according to ESPN. As a result, Jackson is unlikely to be able to participate in the upcoming NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. However, the Lions remain hopeful that he could potentially return if the team advances to the Super Bowl on February 11th.
Jackson sustained the knee injury during the first half of the Lions' victorious 31-23 divisional-round match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This adds to a string of setbacks the former Pro Bowler has endured this season, as he previously dealt with wrist and ankle injuries that caused him to miss five games. In addition to Jackson, right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai (13 games), center Frank Ragnow (two games), and left tackle Taylor Decker (two games) have all missed multiple starts due to injuries. Consequently, the Lions have been forced to field nine different offensive line combinations this season.
However, despite the challenges, the Lions' offense has continued to perform admirably. Testament to the depth and coaching up front, the team has been at their best since the return of their injured players six weeks ago. Quarterback Jared Goff has particularly excelled during this period, completing an impressive 70.5% of his passes for 1,690 yards, 12 touchdowns, and only two interceptions.
With Jackson out, the Lions turned to Kayode Awosika to fill the void at left guard. Awosika faced the tough challenge of protecting the quarterback and allowed five pressures on just 30 pass-blocking plays against the Buccaneers. In comparison, the rest of the offensive linemen combined allowed seven pressures during the game.
Head coach Dan Campbell expressed his confidence in Awosika's performance, highlighting his growth and development over the past two years. Campbell credited Awosika for stepping up and making a seamless transition into the starting lineup.
In addition to Jackson's injury, the Lions also suffered a loss in their tight end corps. No. 2 tight end Brock Wright, who was injured against Tampa Bay, is also expected to miss the upcoming game against the 49ers. To address this setback, the Lions swiftly responded by signing three-time Pro Bowler Zach Ertz.
The Detroit Lions will now have to rally and adapt to the absence of Jackson on the offensive line as they face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game. With their depth and resilience, the Lions aim to overcome this hurdle and continue their promising playoff run.
