The Detroit Lions have made some key roster moves in preparation for their upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16. On Saturday afternoon, the Lions announced the elevation of kicker Michael Badgley and tight end Anthony Firkser to the active roster.

Firkser's elevation was expected, as the team's TE2, Brock Wright, has already been ruled out with a hip injury. This will be Firkser's first game active this season. The five-year veteran brings valuable experience with 106 career catches and 1,207 yards. While Firkser provides depth, rookie Sam LaPorta and third-year tight end James Mitchell are also expected to see increased roles in this game. The Lions' tight ends will play a crucial role in protecting quarterback Jared Goff against the Vikings' aggressive defense.

The elevation of Michael Badgley as the sole kicker on the roster comes after the Lions recently parted ways with Riley Patterson. Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp explained that Badgley secured the position after a month-long kicker battle during practice.

"Badgley had been better over the course of six weeks, and we wanted to give him a fair opportunity before making a decision," stated Fipp. "Ultimately, it became clear that he was playing better and deserved the role."

As for Badgley's career statistics, he has made 94 out of 115 field goals attempted, with a long of 59 yards. However, since his rookie season, he has not made a field goal longer than 53 yards. Badgley has an impressive 97.0% success rate on extra points, having made 161 out of 166 attempts.

This marks Badgley's second elevation from the practice squad, with one more remaining. Should he be elevated again for the Cowboys game, the Lions will be required to sign Badgley to the 53-man roster if they intend to use him beyond Week 17.

Notably, the Lions have decided not to elevate veteran defensive end Bruce Irvin this time. Irvin has just one elevation remaining, and the team may be preserving it for a later game.

As the Detroit Lions face off against the Minnesota Vikings, the elevation of Michael Badgley and Anthony Firkser will provide additional depth and bolster crucial positions. The Lions hope these moves will contribute to a strong performance and potentially secure a victory in Week 16.
