In a move aimed at bolstering their struggling pass rush, the Detroit Lions have officially activated edge rusher James Houston from injured reserve. In a corresponding move, the team has waived Julian Okwara.

Houston suffered an ankle/lower leg injury in early September, which forced him to be placed on injured reserve for recovery. After three weeks of practicing, the Lions opened his 21-day evaluation window, and with that window set to expire, they have deemed him healthy enough to be activated to the 53-man roster.

The Lions have been grappling with a limited pass rush throughout the season, with Aidan Hutchinson being the primary source of production. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill has also contributed from the interior. However, finding a consistent edge rusher to bring pressure opposite Hutchinson has been a challenge.

Houston's addition could prove to be the solution the team needs, as he displayed his abilities in the latter part of the 2022 season with eight sacks in the final seven games. The edge rusher sees himself as an explosive and game-changing player who can make an impact in the pass rush, recording sacks and forcing fumbles.

While Houston is expected to add some firepower to the Lions' front, his role is likely to be that of a pass-rushing specialist. Similar to how Bruce Irvin performed in the regular season's final stretch. Houston's primary focus will be on creating pressure during passing plays.

On the other hand, Okwara, who was also considered for this role, has struggled to find consistency in his performance. The Lions' decision to waive him likely stems from his inability to settle into a routine. Okwara will now be subjected to waivers, meaning he can be claimed by another team following the Super Bowl. If he remains unclaimed, he is free to choose any team, including the Lions, to join their active roster or practice squad.

As the Lions aim to revamp their pass rush, the activation of James Houston offers a glimmer of hope, while Julian Okwara seeks a fresh start and the opportunity to contribute elsewhere in the league.
