FRISCO, Texas - Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has made a speedy recovery following surgery to remove his appendix. Just two days after the procedure, McCarthy has returned to The Star and plans to be on the sideline calling plays in Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
During a scheduled conference call on Friday, McCarthy expressed his optimism about his health, stating, "I feel good and anticipate everything staying normal Sunday night."
McCarthy's return to the team was met with a unique and spirited entrance. According to running back Tony Pollard, as McCarthy walked into the offense's meeting for the first time since the start of the week, 50 Cent's "Many Men" was playing in the background. Pollard remarked that it was a cool moment and expressed his happiness for his coach's recovery, emphasizing that his health is bigger than football.
The Cowboys' coach initially believed he had a stomach virus over the past week. However, upon arriving at the team facility on Wednesday, McCarthy consulted with head athletic trainer Jim Maurer and was promptly sent to the hospital, where he received a diagnosis of appendicitis. Following the diagnosis, McCarthy underwent surgery a few hours later.
Despite being in recovery, McCarthy remained engaged with the team. He was in communication with assistant coaches and quarterback Dak Prescott on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, he conducted virtual meetings with the coaching staff and players.
Reflecting on his condition, McCarthy acknowledged feeling the expected soreness two days after the operation but assured reporters that he was fully focused on the game plan. While he does not require additional medical clearance to coach from the sideline, he expressed the intention to be more cautious of his surroundings when players are approaching him during plays.
McCarthy intends to monitor his workload on Friday and Saturday to avoid any setbacks and ensure a smooth return to coaching duties. He also disproved any notion that his absence had affected the team's focus leading up to the crucial game against the Eagles.
"It's clearly why I felt it was so important for me to get back in here," McCarthy stated. "This is a players' game, and I've built my program around that premise. That's why it's imperative for me to get back in here and get going to make sure the normalcy was totally back in place."
McCarthy praised the players and coaching staff for their ability to maintain momentum and keep the team focused during his absence.
The Dallas Cowboys will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, with McCarthy making his return to the sideline as the team looks to secure a crucial victory in the playoff race.
