In a bold move to secure their defensive line, the Chicago Bears have finalized a contract extension with Montez Sweat, ensuring the defensive end will be a key part of the team's future. The deal comes just days after the Bears acquired Sweat in a trade with the Washington Commanders before the NFL trade deadline.

According to NFL Media, the 27-year-old Sweat will sign a four-year extension worth a whopping $98 million, with $73 million guaranteed. This lucrative deal solidifies Sweat's position as a long-term asset for the Bears. The annual average salary of $24.5 million ranks him fifth among edge rushers in the NFL.

Critics of the move questioned the Bears' decision to trade for Sweat without a guarantee of keeping him beyond the current season. However, Ryan Poles, the team's confident general manager, had unwavering faith that he could present a contract that would entice Sweat to commit to the organization's future. Poles' conviction paid off, as Sweat's extension runs through the 2027 season.

Sweat, who led the Commanders with 6 1/2 sacks, has been in impressive form. He is just 2 1/2 sacks away from his career-high of nine, achieved in 2020. The Bears have struggled with pass rush this season, entering Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints with a league-low 10 sacks. This prompted coach Matt Eberflus to employ more blitzing strategies in recent weeks. Sweat's explosive and relentless playing style is expected to provide a significant boost to the Bears' defensive front, as well as inspire improved performances from the cornerbacks and safeties.

The Bears' acquisition of Sweat marks their second notable deal on the defensive line this week. Previously, the team rewarded nose tackle Andrew Billings with a two-year, $8.5 million extension on Thursday. Billings has played a pivotal role in the Bears' remarkable improvement against the run, with the team jumping from 31st in run defense last season to an impressive third entering Week 9.

With the Sweat extension now secured, Ryan Poles can shift his focus to cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who is in the final year of his contract. The Bears have been engaged in ongoing discussions with Johnson's agent, Chris Ellison, in recent weeks. Poles expressed optimism that a deal with Johnson was within reach before the player expressed interest in pursuing a trade. The Bears will have exclusive negotiating rights with Johnson until the second week of March, providing an opportunity to secure his future with the team.

As the Bears prepare for their upcoming clash against the Saints at the Caesars Superdome, the team is excited to have Montez Sweat's contract situation settled. With a talented and highly paid defensive end added to their ranks, the Bears are aiming to elevate their performance, create turnovers, and continue their push for success in the NFL.
