The team hopes to build on their defensive improvement from the 2023 season, despite their 7-10 finish. Washington, a former Bears assistant, brings a wealth of experience both in the league and with Chicago's defensive scheme.

Having spent last season as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills, Washington brings a successful track record with him. There, he worked under coach Sean McDermott and was part of a Bills team that came within a few plays of making the AFC Championship game.

Washington expressed his excitement for returning to the Bears organization, stating, "My family and I are beyond excited to be returning to the Chicago Bears. It is humbling to have the opportunity to contribute to one of the most esteemed sports organizations in the world!"

Bears coach Matt Eberflus, who handled the defensive coordinator responsibilities last season after Alan Williams' resignation, is expected to continue calling the plays. However, Washington will now be in charge of overseeing Chicago's defense. With his experience and success in Buffalo, Washington's addition should bring a valuable perspective to the team.

The hiring decision also reflects Eberflus' connection to the Bears' past. Washington previously served as an assistant under former head coach Lovie Smith from 2008 to 2010, including coaching the defensive line for the 2010 NFC North championship team. He then joined Ron Rivera in Carolina for nine seasons before heading to Buffalo.

During his time in Carolina, Washington spent seven seasons as a defensive line coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2018-19 seasons. While he called plays for most of the 2018 season, Rivera eventually took back the play-calling duties.

Washington's familiarity with the Chicago area extends beyond his time with the Bears. Before joining the team in 2008, he served as Northwestern University's defensive line coach from 2004 to 2007.

Eberflus praised Washington's leadership skills and experience, stating, "(Washington) is a great communicator with elite leadership skills, and he will enhance our current defensive staff. His track record speaks for itself with coordinator experience as well as expertise in the area of defensive line."

The Bears will have high expectations for their defense in the upcoming season, following their success in 2023. The team boasted the fourth-best run defense since 2000, trailing only the playoff teams from 2018, 2001, and 2010. Additionally, they excelled in areas such as interceptions and expected points added. However, their pass rush still needs improvement, as they ranked among the teams with the fewest sacks in the league.

Washington will now have the task of overseeing a defensive unit led by defensive end Montez Sweat and nose tackle Andrew Billings. The team also added rookies Gervon Dexter and Zacch Pickens through the 2023 draft. It is anticipated that the Bears may prioritize selecting a pass rusher in the upcoming 2024 draft to further strengthen their defensive line.

With the hiring of Eric Washington as defensive coordinator, the Chicago Bears hope to continue their defensive progress and build upon their success in the upcoming season. The addition of Washington's experience and expertise is expected to bolster the team's defense and address areas of improvement, particularly in the pass rush.
