As the NFL free agency period approaches, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are faced with important decisions regarding their roster for the upcoming season. With a healthy budget of over $43 million in cap space available, the Buccaneers have the flexibility to explore various options in the free agency market.
One area of focus for the Bucs will be their defense, particularly the pass rush and defensive line. After their Super Bowl victory, the team understands the need to bolster their defensive firepower. In this pursuit, they may look to acquire talent from the NFC champions, the San Francisco 49ers.
Javon Kinlaw, a defensive lineman who was the 14th overall pick in the 2020 draft, could be a valuable addition for Tampa Bay. Despite dealing with injuries and inconsistent performance, Kinlaw possesses undeniable talent that has yet to be fully unleashed. Pairing him with fellow defensive linemen Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea would create a formidable pass rushing unit along the interior.
Another potential target for the Bucs is outside linebacker Josh Uche. Uche has also had his fair share of inconsistencies throughout his career. However, his impressive 2022 season, which saw him record 11.5 sacks, cannot be overlooked. Spotrac has estimated his market value at just over eight million dollars per year, making him an enticing option for Tampa Bay on a short-term deal.
The departure of safety Jordan Whitehead to the New York Jets in the 2022 offseason left a void in the Bucs' secondary. Now, with the opportunity to bring him back, the Buccaneers are considering reuniting Whitehead with Antoine Winfield Jr. Whitehead's familiarity with Todd Bowles' defensive scheme, combined with his ability to provide solid run support and effective blitzing from the strong safety position, make him an attractive option for the Bucs.
Although the Jets may attempt to retain Whitehead, if he hits the open market, the Buccaneers would be wise to gauge his interest in returning to Tampa Bay. His presence would fill a significant need on their defense and reestablish the successful partnership he had with the team during his earlier tenure.
As the Buccaneers prepare for NFL free agency, their focus on acquiring defensive playmakers is evident. With ample cap space and the desire to improve their pass rush and secondary, Tampa Bay will be actively exploring all options to strengthen their defense for the 2024 season.
