In a recent trade announcement, the Milwaukee Brewers have acquired infielder/outfielder Jake Bauers from the New York Yankees. As part of the deal, minor league outfielders Jace Avina and Brian Sanchez will be heading to the Yankees.
Bauers, 28, joined the Yankees on a minor league deal ahead of the 2023 season and went on to make appearances in 84 major league games during the year. While his strikeout rate stood at a high 34.9%, Bauers showcased his ability to draw walks at a 9.9% rate, along with hitting 12 home runs. With a batting line of .202/.279/.413, he ended the season with a wRC+ of 89. As he enters arbitration for the first time, experts project his salary for next year to be around $1.7 million.
Despite his performance in 2023, Bauers has demonstrated strong hitting abilities in the minors and has garnered attention from teams across the league. Originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2013, he was later involved in trades that saw him move to the Tampa Bay Rays, then to the Cleveland Indians, and finally to the Seattle Mariners in 2021. However, he struggled to find success at the major league level with any of these clubs.
Throughout his major league career, Bauers holds a batting line of .211/.302/.361, but his performance at the Triple-A level is much more impressive, with a line of .257/.363/.438. The Brewers, who are looking for a replacement for Rowdy Tellez, are hoping that Bauers can finally excel in the majors. Tellez, who hit .215/.291/.376 this year, is projected to be paid $5.9 million in his final arbitration year, potentially making him a non-tender candidate. With Bauers slated to earn significantly less and having two more seasons of club control, the Brewers believe he can bring better value for money.
However, the Brewers still have a few hours until the tender deadline at 7 pm Central tonight to make a decision regarding Tellez. Bauers' versatility as a player, with experience at first base and in the corner outfield, may provide the team with options to fit both players on the roster. The Brewers already boast a strong outfield lineup, including players like Christian Yelich, Tyrone Taylor, Joey Wiemer, Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick, and Blake Perkins. Furthermore, prospect Jackson Chourio is rapidly making progress towards a major league debut.
On the other side of the trade, the Yankees have acquired two promising prospects for Bauers. Avina, who will turn 21 in June, spent the 2023 season in Single-A, where he posted a batting line of .233/.373/.442 and a wRC+ of 134. Meanwhile, Sanchez, at just 19 years old, played in the Dominican Summer League this year and impressed with a line of .297/.414/.446, earning him a wRC+ of 129. Neither player is currently eligible for the Rule 5 Draft and won't require a spot on the 40-man roster for the time being.
With this trade, the Brewers aim to bolster their lineup by bringing in Jake Bauers, hoping he can tap into his potential at the major league level. Meanwhile, the Yankees add promising prospects to their farm system, solidifying their long-term plans.
