In a major trade that has sent shockwaves throughout the baseball world, the Atlanta Braves have acquired star pitcher Chris Sale from the Boston Red Sox. The news was reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan, confirming the deal that also involves infield prospect Vaughn Grissom and a significant financial component.
According to reports, the Red Sox will be sending Sale to Atlanta in exchange for highly touted infield prospect Vaughn Grissom. This deal marks the end of Sale's tumultuous run in Boston, where he spent seven years and played a crucial role in the Red Sox winning the 2018 World Series.
In an effort to facilitate the trade, Sale waived his full no-trade clause, allowing the deal to come to fruition. The Red Sox also agreed to include $17 million in the trade to help cover Sale's hefty $27.5 million salary for the 2024 season.
Sale's time in Boston has been marred by injuries, especially in recent years. After joining the team in a blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox in 2016, Sale started off strong, finishing high in the AL Cy Young Award voting in his first two seasons with the Red Sox. However, injury problems started to plague him as early as the 2018 campaign.
The Red Sox showed their commitment to Sale by signing him to a five-year, $145 million extension in 2019, covering the 2020-2024 seasons, with a club option for 2025. Unfortunately, the extension turned out to be a misfire, as Sale's string of injuries only worsened. He underwent Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss the entire 2020 season and a significant portion of the 2021 campaign.
Over the past two seasons, Sale has faced a series of ailments, including stress reactions in his ribs and shoulder blade, a fractured finger, and even a broken wrist from a bicycle accident. As a result, the star pitcher has only managed a total of 48 1/3 innings in 2021 and 2022, with a slight rebound in 2023, where he pitched 102 2/3 innings.
While Sale's health concerns are clear, the Braves are taking a calculated risk by acquiring the left-hander. If he can regain his previous form, Sale could become a major asset for Atlanta's pitching rotation. On the other hand, the Red Sox may be looking to turn the page on Sale's injury troubles and rebuild with the young talent they receive in return, such as the promising Vaughn Grissom.
Both teams will be hopeful that this trade will benefit them in the long run. For now, the baseball world awaits to see how Chris Sale performs in a new uniform, while the Red Sox evaluate the future potential of Vaughn Grissom within their organization.
