Waldron, who spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, brings a wealth of experience and success to the Bears' coaching staff.
Coach Matt Eberflus expressed his excitement about adding Waldron to the team, emphasizing his diverse coaching background and ability to effectively communicate and teach. Eberflus also thanked the other candidates who participated in the exhaustive search process.
With 10 seasons of coaching experience in the NFL, as well as collegiate and UFL experience, Waldron has proven his expertise in developing high-performing offenses. During his tenure with the Seahawks, the team's offense ranked highly in various categories, including yards per touch, big plays passing and rushing, completion percentage, yards per reception, and passing touchdowns.
In the 2022 season, under Waldron's guidance, Seattle quarterback Geno Smith experienced a career resurgence. Smith led the league in completion percentage and ranked among the top players in touchdown passes, passer rating, and passing yards. His outstanding performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection and the AP Comeback Player of the Year award. Additionally, Seahawks receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf both achieved 1,000-yard seasons.
Prior to his time with the Seahawks, Waldron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame before joining the New England Patriots as a quality control coach and later as a tight ends coach. He then gained experience at various levels in football, including the UFL, high school, and the University of Massachusetts, before returning to the NFL.
Waldron's significant impact was also felt during his four-year stint with the Los Angeles Rams under the guidance of head coach Sean McVay. Serving as the tight ends coach and later as the passing game coordinator, Waldron contributed to the team's success, helping quarterback Jared Goff achieve a career-best season and becoming the first quarterback in franchise history to record back-to-back 4,000 passing yard seasons.
The Bears' decision to hire Waldron demonstrates their commitment to improving their offense and building on their storied history. Waldron expressed his appreciation for the opportunity and looks forward to working with the team's passionate fan base.
The Bears now turn their attention to building out the rest of the coaching staff as they prepare for the upcoming season. With Waldron's proven track record and expertise, the Bears are eager to see the positive impact he will have on their offense.
