The Chicago Bears have made a significant addition to their coaching staff, announcing the hiring of Eric Washington as their new defensive coordinator. With an impressive 15 years of NFL coaching experience, Washington brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Bears' defensive unit.

Washington's journey in the NFL began with the Bears back in 2008 as a defensive assistant, and he later served as the team's defensive line coach in 2010. After his time in Chicago, Washington went on to work with the Buffalo Bills, where he spent the past four seasons as their defensive line coach, senior defensive assistant, and assistant head coach.

During his tenure with the Bills, Washington played a key role in coaching one of the league's most formidable defenses. In the 2021 season, the Bills led the NFL in points allowed per game and topped the rankings in total yards per game and passing yards. The defense's strong performance helped Buffalo secure four consecutive victories, with 19 sacks recorded during this winning streak.

Washington's success continued in 2022, as the Bills ranked second in the league in points permitted. In the following season, Buffalo finished fourth in points allowed, sacks, and sixth in gross passing yards. His coaching prowess proved especially impactful with the Panthers, where linebacker Luke Kuechly earned All-Pro honors under his guidance and the defense ranked second in sacks.

Returning to the Bears organization is a special moment for Washington, and he expressed his excitement for the opportunity to contribute to one of the NFL's most esteemed sports organizations. He commended the Bears' front office, coach Matt Eberflus, and the McCaskey family for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Bears' defense.

With previous experience coaching the Bears' defensive line in 2010, Washington already has a familiarity with the team's system and culture. During that season, he played a pivotal role in overseeing a defensive line that accounted for 25 sacks and helped the Bears rank highly in total yards, run defense, and points allowed.

Prior to his NFL coaching career, Washington served as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M and worked on the coaching staff for Ohio University and Northwestern University. A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Washington played tight end at Grambling State before graduating with a degree in education.

The Bears are confident that Washington's exceptional leadership skills and his expertise in defensive line strategies will make a significant impact on the team's performance. Coach Matt Eberflus expressed his excitement for Washington's appointment and acknowledged the other outstanding candidates who applied for the position.

As the Bears gear up for the upcoming season, the addition of Eric Washington as the defensive coordinator is certainly a move that fans will be eagerly watching. With his track record of success in coaching some of the best defenses in the NFL, Washington brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that could elevate the Bears' defense to new heights.
