Since taking over as the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots in Week 12, Bailey Zappe has been instrumental in reviving the team's offense. Despite a drop in overall success rate, Zappe has led the Patriots to scoring more points per game. In his four starts, the second-year quarterback has completed 12 explosive pass plays of 20+ yards in just 117 attempts, demonstrating his ability to push the ball downfield effectively.

One of the main reasons behind Zappe's success in creating big plays is his exceptional playmaking ability. Despite playing behind one of the league's weakest offensive lines in terms of pass blocking, Zappe has impressed with his pocket awareness and ability to maneuver the pocket, creating additional opportunities down the field.

Offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien praised Zappe's pocket presence, stating, "He was able to negotiate the pocket, manipulate the pocket. It's not always perfect, and so he does a good job of that. Bailey did a really good job of keeping his eyes downfield and negotiating that pocket."

Zappe's adeptness in the pocket was on full display during the Patriots' recent victory over the Denver Broncos. On a crucial play during New England's first touchdown drive in the second half, Zappe evaded a rusher and stepped up in the pocket to connect with DeMario Douglas for a 41-yard gain. This set the stage for New England's subsequent touchdown just four plays later.

Furthermore, Zappe's playmaking ability was evident on several key plays that went beyond the highlight reel. During the game-winning drive, Zappe narrowly escaped a sack and completed a check down to Ezekiel Elliott, keeping the drive alive and contributing to the setup for the game-winning field goal.

The impact of Zappe's playmaking ability has been a major factor in the Patriots' offensive resurgence since he took over the quarterback position from Mac Jones. Assistant coach Evan Rothstein has been working with Zappe on his pocket presence, and the results are clear.

Zappe himself emphasizes the importance of daily practice on pocket awareness, stating, "The more you do it, the more it becomes like second nature to you... You don't want to be back there worried about the rush. You want to be able to have your eyes downfield."

Zappe's next test will come against the formidable pass rush of the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Bills boast the fourth-best pass rush win rate in the league, making it crucial for Zappe to read the defense and make quick decisions to get the ball out.

"I mean they play hard. Their front four, those guys, they're coming after you... It's going to be up to me to kind of see what they're trying to do," Zappe acknowledged, recognizing the challenge ahead.

With Zappe's playmaking ability and improved pocket presence, the New England Patriots' offense appears to be in good hands as they continue to compete for victories in the remaining games of the season.
