In an effort to revitalize the Atlanta Falcons and bring success to the franchise, team owner Arthur Blank is reportedly aiming high with his next coaching hire. According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, Blank could potentially target University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh or New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick to replace former head coach Arthur Smith.
While both Harbaugh and Belichick are currently under contract with their respective teams, the Falcons are viewed as a potential destination for either coach. The Athletic's Dianna Russini has identified the Falcons as a "team to watch" if the Patriots decide to part ways with Belichick, as widely expected.
Harbaugh's immediate focus, however, remains on the upcoming national championship game between Michigan and Washington. The Wolverines will be determined to retain their successful coach, who has led them to three consecutive Big Ten championships, a feat not accomplished in over three decades. With a victory in the national championship game, Michigan would claim their first outright title since 1948 (excluding a shared championship in 1997 with Nebraska).
Blank made the decision to dismiss Arthur Smith following the Falcons' third consecutive disappointing 7-10 season. Smith's tenure was marred by questionable decision-making and a perplexing handling of the team's young offensive stars, such as running back Bijan Robinson, tight end Kyle Pitts, and wide receiver Drake London.
Acknowledging the difficulty of such choices, Blank said in a statement, "Decisions like this are never easy and they never feel good." While expressing appreciation for Smith's efforts in creating a positive team culture, Blank emphasized the team's underwhelming on-field results. After careful consideration, Blank determined that new leadership in the head coaching position is the best way forward for the Falcons.
The search committee for the next head coach will include current general manager Terry Fontenot, indicating his likely retention in his current role. However, there is a possibility that Harbaugh or Belichick could be given final authority over football operations should they take over the Falcons' coaching position.
All eyes will be on Blank as he works to secure a high-profile coach to lead the Falcons towards future success. The hiring of someone like Harbaugh or Belichick could provide the franchise with the much-needed direction and expertise to turn their fortunes around in the coming seasons.
