In a recent development, Houston Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu's two-game suspension has been upheld by an independent arbitrator. However, the suspension will not take effect until the start of the 2024 season, allowing Abreu to be available for Game 7 of the AL Championship Series on Monday night.
The suspension stems from a benches-clearing incident during Game 5, when Abreu threw a first-pitch fastball at the left arm of Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia. The incident occurred in the eighth inning after Garcia had celebrated a go-ahead home run. MLB senior vice president of on-field operations Michael Hill stated that Abreu was penalized for intentionally throwing at Garcia. The pitch was deemed intentional by all six umpires, resulting in Abreu's ejection.
Abreu, along with other Astros players, has denied intentionally hitting Garcia. The right-hander appealed the ban before Game 6, which allowed him to be available for that game. However, the appeals hearing ultimately confirmed the suspension before Game 7.
The Astros' primary setup reliever, Abreu, has been a key component of the team's bullpen throughout the postseason. With a stellar 2.45 ERA in eight appearances, he has been one of Houston's top relievers. Manager Dusty Baker expressed his relief at Abreu's availability for Game 7, thanking him for being prepared to throw as much as possible in the event of a suspension.
While Abreu's ban will be delayed until the 2024 season, he will be ineligible to play for the remainder of the AL Championship Series. However, should the Astros advance to the World Series, Abreu will be eligible to pitch in that series.
As the Astros prepare for the crucial Game 7, having Abreu as an option from the bullpen provides a significant boost to the team's pitching depth. With the series on the line, Houston will be relying on Abreu's talents in their pursuit of a spot in the World Series.
