Assistant Coach Terrell Williams Departs Tennessee Titans for Detroit Lions

According to a report from Dianna Russini, Tennessee Titans assistant head coach and defensive line coach Terrell Williams is leaving the team to join the Detroit Lions. Williams will serve as Dan Campbell's run game coordinator and defensive line coach for the Lions. This move marks a reunion between Williams, Campbell, and Lions general manager Brad Holmes.

Williams has a history with Campbell and Holmes, as he previously coached Campbell when he was the tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2015. Williams also coached Holmes during his time as a defensive tackle at North Carolina A&T in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Currently representing the Titans at the Senior Bowl, Williams' departure comes as no surprise. The newly appointed head coach of the Titans, Brian Callahan, recently hired Dennard Wilson as the team's defensive coordinator, and has not retained any of Mike Vrabel's assistants. Other confirmed departures from the Titans' coaching staff include Tim Kelly, Charles London, Shane Bowen, Ryan Crow, Bobby King, Jason Houghtaling, Tom Quinn, and others.

During his tenure as the Titans' defensive line coach, Williams has consistently excelled in his role. He has been instrumental in the development of players such as Jeffery Simmons, Denico Autry, and Harold Landry, all of whom have praised his coaching abilities. Williams has also been successful in getting the best out of undrafted players like Teair Tart, as well as rejuvenating the performances of veteran journeymen like Mario Edwards and DeMarcus Walker.

With Williams' departure, Coach Callahan faces the challenge of assembling a new coaching staff. While both Callahan and new defensive coordinator Wilson bring some coaching experience to the table, the loss of Williams as an assistant head coach highlights the need to bring in more high-level coaching expertise. Potential additions to the staff could include Bill Callahan or Mike Munchak as the offensive line coach, or Eric Studesville as the offensive coordinator, who is considered the most experienced among the known candidates for the position.

As the Titans and the Lions continue to make adjustments to their coaching staffs, both teams will be looking to build on their previous successes and reach new heights in the upcoming season.
