In a postgame news conference on Sunday, Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon expressed uncertainty regarding Kyler Murray's status for Week 10. However, Gannon made it clear on Monday that Murray is expected to start against the Falcons if the week progresses favorably.
Gannon shared the team's plan for Murray in the upcoming week, stating that the young quarterback would continue to ramp up his practice participation. Murray will be taking the first-team reps, and if everything goes well, he will reclaim the starting position on Sunday.
It has been a long road to recovery for Murray, who has been sidelined for 329 days since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Following surgery on January 3, Murray has had to patiently wait for his opportunity to return to the field. The Cardinals have announced that Murray's anticipated return will come off the reserve/physically unable to perform list, with the official move expected to occur on Wednesday.
The Cardinals made a trade for Joshua Dobbs just before the season began, but he was eventually replaced as the starting quarterback by Murray after eight games. However, the team traded Dobbs to the Vikings last week, opening the door for rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune to make his first NFL start against the Browns on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to find success and were shut out 27-0.
With their current record standing at a disappointing 1-8, the Cardinals have their sights set on the future. Holding two first-round picks in the 2024 draft, the remaining eight games of the season will serve as an evaluation period for Murray and a chance for the team's decision-makers, including head coach Jonathan Gannon and General Manager Monti Ossenfort, to assess Murray's future with the organization.
It will be an eagerly anticipated return for Kyler Murray and the Cardinals as they aim to bounce back and rekindle their hopes for the season. The quarterback's impressive skills and leadership will undoubtedly play a crucial role as the team seeks to make a turnaround in the coming weeks.
