In a bid to revitalize their struggling offense, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly hired Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator. The news was confirmed by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Smith, 41, previously served as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for three seasons before being relieved of his duties earlier this year. Despite three consecutive 7-10 seasons without a playoff berth, Smith's tenure in Atlanta showcased his ability to lead an offense.
Before his time with the Falcons, Smith spent a decade with the Tennessee Titans organization, starting as an assistant coach before eventually becoming the offensive coordinator for his final two seasons. Under Smith's guidance in 2019, the Titans had their highest-scoring season in 16 years, led by rushing champion Derrick Henry and the impressive play of quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
Smith's appointment comes after the Steelers made an unprecedented in-season coaching change, relieving Matt Canada of his duties after Week 11. This was the first in-season coaching change for the team since 1941, highlighting the urgency with which the Steelers are seeking to turn their offense around.
The Steelers' offense had a lackluster performance during the 2023 season, finishing 25th in total yards per game with an average of 304.3 and 28th in points per game with an average of 17.9. Smith's primary task as the new offensive coordinator will be to rejuvenate the team's offensive production and find solutions for the struggling quarterback, Kenny Pickett.
Pickett had a difficult season, losing his starting role due to an ankle injury and subsequently being replaced by Mason Rudolph for the team's sole playoff game. Steelers president Art Rooney II emphasized the importance of Smith's involvement in the development of Pickett, stating that the offensive coordinator must play a significant role in helping the quarterback take the necessary steps forward in his career.
With Arthur Smith at the helm of their offense, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be hoping for a fresh start and a renewed sense of purpose in the upcoming 2024 season. As the team looks to bounce back from a disappointing year, all eyes will be on Smith's ability to maximize the potential of the Steelers' offensive weapons.
