In a surprising move, Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Tyler Buchner has entered the transfer portal, but not for football. The redshirt sophomore has decided to explore his options in lacrosse, according to sources close to Buchner.

Buchner, who transferred to Alabama from Notre Dame last offseason, played in three games for the Fighting Irish in 2022. However, it seems that his passion lies in lacrosse, a sport he excelled at during his high school days at The Bishop's School in La Jolla, California.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 215 pounds, Buchner was a highly regarded lacrosse recruit in high school. In fact, he was ranked as one of the top recruits in the country. Despite his success in football, Buchner is now set to explore his lacrosse career in the immediate future.

It is unclear whether Buchner's decision to enter the transfer portal means he is permanently leaving football behind. Sources suggest that he hasn't ruled out a return to the gridiron, but for now, his focus will be on lacrosse.

Buchner's move comes at a time when the Crimson Tide's quarterback room is experiencing some changes. With Jalen Milroe emerging as the starter for Alabama, Buchner found himself in a quarterback competition. However, after struggling in a game against South Florida, coach Nick Saban opted to go back to Milroe as the starter for the remainder of the season.

As the Crimson Tide gear up for the 2024 Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential, where they will face top-ranked Michigan, they do so riding an impressive 11-game winning streak. Their only loss this season came at the hands of Texas back in September.

As for Buchner, he will now shift his focus to exploring his lacrosse options. Whether or not he returns to the football field remains to be seen, but for now, his journey is taking him onto the lacrosse field, where he hopes to make an impact.
