The San Francisco 49ers emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle against the Green Bay Packers, securing a 24-21 win and earning a spot in the NFC Championship Game. Despite facing a resilient Packers team, the 49ers capitalized on their opportunities, taking leads early and late in the game to ultimately seal their victory.
While the 49ers defense faced challenges containing the Packers' offense, they successfully limited Green Bay to only two touchdowns on six drives that reached San Francisco territory. It was a key factor in their ability to maintain their lead throughout the game.
However, it was clear that 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy did not have his best performance against the Packers. He struggled to find his rhythm, missing several open throws and narrowly avoiding interceptions, including one potential pick-six early in the game. Purdy finished the game with a 59 percent completion rate, his third lowest this season.
Despite his struggles, Purdy found his composure when it mattered most. In the crucial moments of the game, with the 49ers trailing 21-17, Purdy led a 12-play, 68-yard touchdown drive that gave the 49ers a 24-21 lead. He completed 6 out of 7 passes for 47 yards and made a critical scramble for nine additional yards. Christian McCaffrey then scored a nine-yard rushing touchdown on 3rd & 1, securing the go-ahead score.
Purdy's ability to make clutch plays under pressure answered lingering questions about his performance in crucial moments. In previous losses, the 49ers struggled to close out games. However, Purdy's performance against the Packers silenced doubters and propelled his team to the NFC Championship Game.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan, who has been lauded for his coaching this season, made a few questionable decisions that cost the team valuable opportunities. One such decision came at the end of the first half when the 49ers had a chance to extend their lead. Shanahan opted for a conservative approach, draining the play clock and settling for a field goal attempt that was ultimately blocked.
Additionally, Shanahan's reluctance to rely on the run game despite its success earlier in the game raised concerns about the team's offensive balance. The 49ers only gave Christian McCaffrey 11 carries through three quarters, despite the Packers' weak run defense. It was not until late in the game that the 49ers began utilizing the run effectively.
Injury concerns also surfaced during the game. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a concussion evaluation and a shoulder injury, forcing him to miss the entire second half. Samuel's availability for the upcoming NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions remains uncertain, with a 50-50 chance of him being able to play.
Although the 49ers have other offensive weapons in Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, and McCaffrey, the loss of Samuel could impact the team's offensive dynamics. Samuel's injury will be closely monitored leading up to the next game.
With their victory over the Packers, the 49ers have advanced to the NFC Championship Game where they will face the Detroit Lions. While the Lions may not present the same level of challenge as the Packers, the 49ers will need to address their key areas of improvement, particularly in their offensive decision-making and maintaining a balanced attack, to secure a spot in the Super Bowl.
