In the final week of the regular season, a total of 24 teams are fighting for bowl eligibility, hoping to secure their spot in the postseason games. As of Week 13, 68 teams had already secured at least six wins and a guaranteed spot in a bowl game, excluding James Madison and Jacksonville State who are transitioning from the FCS level to the top level of college football.
With 15 bowl spots still up for grabs, the competition is fierce among the 24 teams sitting at five wins after Eastern Michigan's recent victory over Buffalo. However, it is unlikely that all of these teams will emerge victorious.
Among the five-win teams, six are considered double-digit underdogs, while just 12 are favorites heading into the final week. Notably, the favorites include Nebraska, who is a 1.5-point favorite at home against Iowa, as well as Old Dominion and Syracuse, both with a 2.5-point advantage.
If all the favorites manage to win in Week 13 and Navy triumphs over Army on December 9th, a staggering 80 teams will become bowl-eligible. Additionally, James Madison and Jacksonville State, as the first teams on the list, will fill in any remaining spots if there aren't enough six-win teams to complete the 82 bowl slots.
While the perfect scenario may seem far-fetched, it's intriguing to imagine a bowl field without any five-win teams. However, the reality may differ from this projection. Nevertheless, college football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the final week's outcomes.
As the regular season draws to a close, fans eagerly await the announcement of the New Year's Six Bowls, where the top teams in the nation will showcase their skills in highly anticipated matchups. The upcoming bowl season promises to be exhilarating for both players and spectators alike.
