Frances Sternhagen, an acclaimed actress known for her impressive career spanning both stage and screen, has died at the age of 93, her family confirmed. The Tony Award-winning actress passed away on Monday in New Rochelle, New York, from natural causes.

Sternhagen had a notable presence on television, with recurring roles in popular series such as "ER" and "Cheers." She portrayed the regal grandmother of Dr. Carter on "ER" and Cliff's mother on "Cheers," earning two Emmy nominations for the latter. Her talent extended to the big screen as well, with memorable performances in films like "Outland" alongside Sean Connery and "Misery" starring James Caan.

In addition to her television and film work, Sternhagen had a significant impact on Broadway. She received seven Tony Award nominations throughout her career and won in the category of Featured Actress in a Play for Neil Simon's "The Doctor" in 1974 and a revival of "The Heiress" in 1995. Her other notable stage appearances included "On Golden Pond," "Angel," and "Morning's at Seven."

Born in Washington, D.C., Sternhagen studied drama at Vassar College and further honed her skills at the Perry Mansfield School of the Theatre and under Sanford Meisner at the Group Theater. Prior to her acting career, she also taught acting, singing, and dancing at the Milton Academy in Massachusetts.

Recognized for her exceptional contributions to the theater community, Sternhagen was honored with the Helen Hayes Tribute by the Helen Hayes Award Organization in 2007. She was also an inductee into the Theatre Hall of Fame and served on the hall's executive committee.

Frances Sternhagen was married to actor Thomas Carlin from 1956 until his death in 1991. She is survived by her six children, Paul, Tony, Peter, John, Amanda, and Sarah, as well as nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Sternhagen's remarkable career and life is being planned by her family for mid-January, coinciding with what would have been her 94th birthday. Her family shared that they are continuously inspired by her enduring love and legacy.

The entertainment industry mourns the loss of a talented and versatile artist whose impact will continue to be felt for generations to come. Frances Sternhagen's contribution to stage, screen, and television will forever be remembered and cherished.
