In an exciting announcement, Marvel Studios has revealed the ensemble cast for its highly anticipated film, "Fantastic Four." The iconic superhero quartet, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, will feature Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (The Thing).
As part of the casting reveal, Disney also confirmed a release date change for "Fantastic Four," which is now scheduled to hit theaters on May 2, 2025. The previously announced film "Thunderbolts" has been pushed back to July 25, 2025, in order to accommodate the Fantastic Four's debut.
While the primary villains are yet to be cast, fans eagerly anticipate the introduction of Victor von Doom, a formidable antagonist from the Marvel universe. Marvel Studios has remained tight-lipped about the plot details, following their usual practice, but in the comics, the Fantastic Four gain their extraordinary powers after being exposed to cosmic rays during a space mission.
Reed Richards, the intelligent and elastic Mr. Fantastic, will be portrayed by Pedro Pascal, known for his roles in "The Mandalorian" and "Narcos." Vanessa Kirby, acclaimed for her performances in "Pieces of a Woman" and "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," will bring Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) to life. Joseph Quinn, recognized for his work in "Catherine the Great" and "Game of Thrones," will embody the fiery Johnny Storm (Human Torch). Lastly, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, known for "The Punisher" and "Girls," will take on the role of Ben Grimm (The Thing), a lovable powerhouse with a heavy heart due to his unique appearance.
"Fantastic Four" will be directed by Matt Shakman, who helmed the highly acclaimed series "WandaVision" and "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters." The screenplay will be written by Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer, promising an exciting and captivating story for Marvel fans.
Prior to this announcement, the Fantastic Four had been absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the movie rights belonged to 20th Century Fox. The franchise saw previous iterations with actors such as Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan in the lead roles. However, the 2015 reboot proved to be unsuccessful both critically and commercially.
Following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the stage was set for the Fantastic Four to join the Marvel Studios family. Fans caught a glimpse of Reed Richards in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" in 2022, with John Krasinski making a clever cameo as an alternate version of the character. This nod to the fans' campaign to cast Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic thrilled audiences, generating even more excitement for the upcoming film.
Marvel Studios' decision to establish the full foursome in the MCU could also signify a new anchor for the franchise. Critics and fans alike have previously expressed concerns about the studio's post-"Avengers: Endgame" output, feeling that it lacked a clear direction after the departure of key characters like Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).
With the announcement of the talented cast, the upcoming "Fantastic Four" film promises to be a thrilling addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filming is expected to commence during the summer, building anticipation for the superhero quartet's long-awaited return to the big screen.
