Longtime producer Lorne Michaels has revealed that Tina Fey, former Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast member and creator of 30 Rock, could potentially be his successor as the show's producer. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the Emmy Awards, Michaels expressed his confidence in Fey's abilities, saying, "It could easily be Tina Fey."

While Michaels acknowledged that there are other talented individuals currently working on SNL who could be considered for the role, he emphasized Fey's brilliance and noted that she holds a significant place in his life. He further mentioned that he will continue to be a part of the show until its 50th anniversary in February 2025.

After leaving SNL in 2006, Fey went on to establish herself as a powerhouse in the film industry. She collaborated with Michaels on various projects, including the critically acclaimed sitcom 30 Rock, which was based on her experiences as a writer at SNL and parodied the sketch comedy show. Michaels also served as a producer on Fey's blockbuster film Mean Girls, as well as its subsequent Broadway musical and the upcoming 2024 film adaptation.

During this year's Emmy Awards, Fey, along with fellow SNL alum Amy Poehler, made an appearance at the Weekend Update desk to present the award for Outstanding Variety Special. Fey amusingly remarked, "We've reached the stage in life where we'll only present awards sitting down."

As the 50th anniversary of SNL approaches, Michaels remains committed to overseeing the show's celebrations. While the search for his successor continues, the industry waits eagerly to see if Tina Fey will take the reins of SNL and continue the show's legacy of comedic excellence.
