In a show of solidarity, Hillary Clinton reached out to actresses Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, reassuring them that they are "more than Kenough" after they were not nominated for their roles in the movie "Barbie" at the Oscars.
The highest-grossing film of 2023, "Barbie," earned eight Academy Award nominations, but Gerwig and Robbie were left out of the running in their respective categories. Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express her support for the actresses.
"While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you," Clinton wrote. "You're both so much more than Kenough," she added, referencing a phrase from the movie that highlights female empowerment.
Clinton's comments may have been influenced by her own experience in the 2016 election, where she won the popular vote, but lost in the Electoral College to former President Donald Trump. With her message, she sought to remind Gerwig and Robbie that awards do not define their talent and worth.
Gerwig managed to garner a nomination for best adapted screenplay for "Barbie," recognizing her skillful adaptation of the story. However, she was overlooked in the best director category. Similarly, Robbie did not receive a nomination for her portrayal of the titular character, Barbie.
Ryan Gosling, who played the character Ken in the movie, also expressed disappointment over the snub. "To say that I'm disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement," Gosling said. "Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees."
Despite the Oscar oversight, "Barbie" did receive acknowledgment in other areas. The film earned nominations for original song, production design, and costume design. Additionally, actress America Ferrera received a nomination for best supporting actress for her role in the movie.
Clinton's support serves as a reminder to Gerwig and Robbie that their performances in "Barbie" have resonated with audiences worldwide. The duo can find solace in the adoration they receive from their loyal fan base, regardless of the absence of an Oscar nomination.
As the Oscars draw closer, the message of unity and encouragement from Clinton, along with the disappointment expressed by Gosling, shines a light on the importance of recognizing exceptional talent in the film industry.
