In a surprising turn of events, Ellen Pompeo will be making more appearances in the upcoming 20th season of Grey's Anatomy than originally anticipated. Sources have revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the actress, known for her portrayal of Dr. Meredith Grey, is set to appear in at least four episodes of the season, with the potential for more.

Fans of the long-running medical drama were previously informed that Pompeo would have a minimal onscreen role in the landmark 20th season. This decision stemmed from her transition from a series regular to a recurring character after signing on to produce and star in a new, untitled limited series for Hulu, which is currently in pre-production.

In the previous season, Pompeo appeared in less than half of the 20 episodes and was written out in the finale after her character relocated to Boston. Despite this reduced presence, it is expected that Pompeo will continue to lend her distinctive voiceover narration to the show, a trademark that has become synonymous with Grey's Anatomy.

Pompeo's unexpected appearance in a teaser trailer for season 20 generated significant headlines, as sources reveal that her character will have a substantial storyline that will be introduced in the upcoming premiere. This revelation has sparked excitement among fans who are eager to see what lies ahead for the iconic Dr. Meredith Grey.

Additionally, it has been confirmed that Jessica Capshaw will reprise her role as Arizona in a single episode of the 20th season. As for the season itself, it will be comprised of only 10 episodes due to production delays caused by last year's dual strikes, which had a significant impact on the broadcast schedule.

Notably, the new season marks the debut of Meg Marinis as the showrunner, taking over from Krista Vernoff who departed at the end of the 19th season. Marinis has a long history with Grey's Anatomy, having been with the show since its third season. She ascended through the ranks, starting as a writer's production assistant, then working as a writer's assistant and medical researcher before eventually becoming an executive producer. Over the years, Marinis has contributed to the writing of more than 25 episodes of the popular medical drama.

As Grey's Anatomy's 20th season approaches, fans eagerly anticipate the return of Ellen Pompeo to bring further depth and intrigue to the beloved character of Dr. Meredith Grey. With a big storyline already being teased and the experienced Meg Marinis at the helm as showrunner, viewers can expect another captivating and emotional journey within the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
