In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, award-winning actress Angelina Jolie expressed her doubts about pursuing an acting career if she were starting out in today's industry. Jolie, who has been in the public eye for over two decades, revealed that the expectation to be constantly public and share personal details was not as prevalent when she first began her journey in Hollywood.
The toll of intense public scrutiny became apparent when Jolie divorced actor Brad Pitt seven years ago. The actress disclosed that the stress became so overwhelming that she noticed physical changes, including a different vocal register during the filming of her Disney sequel, "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil." Jolie cited a strong physical reaction to stress, with her blood sugar fluctuating and even experiencing Bell's palsy six months before the divorce.
Living in Los Angeles, Jolie admitted that she has limited social contact due to the unwanted attention she attracts whenever she steps outside. Despite being a constant subject of tabloid gossip, the actress stated that she does not pay attention to what is being written about her in the press, as she has been in the industry for so long, having heard everything.
Having plans to eventually leave Los Angeles permanently and spend more time in her home in Cambodia, Jolie explained that the desire to seek authenticity was heightened after her divorce. Reflecting on her upbringing and the shallow nature of Hollywood, she expressed the need to move away from such an environment.
In a previous interview with Vogue magazine in September, Jolie revealed that she had begun taking fewer film roles seven years ago, opting for projects with shorter shooting schedules. While she did not delve into specifics at the time, it coincided with the end of her marriage to Pitt, who she filed for divorce from in 2016 following an alleged physical altercation on a plane.
Jolie admitted to feeling somewhat down lately and shared that she hasn't felt like herself for the past decade, though she chose not to elaborate on the matter.
Following her leading roles in Disney's "Maleficent" in 2014 and the 2015 film "By the Sea," which she directed and starred in alongside Pitt, Jolie's filmography took a significant pause. Over the past eight years, she has only taken on two lead roles, including "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" in 2019 and "Those Who Wish Me Dead" in 2021. She also had supporting roles in Marvel's "Eternals" in 2021 and the fantasy film "Come Away" in 2020. Jolie lent her voice to Disney's "The One and Only Ivan" in 2020 and will be seen in the upcoming "Kung Fu Panda 4." Recently, she completed filming Pablo Larrain's "Maria," in which she portrays the late opera singer Maria Callas in the final days of her life.
