In a recent development, actor Alec Baldwin has been indicted and will face trial for involuntary manslaughter in connection with the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film "Rust" in 2021. The decision to proceed with charges was made by a New Mexico grand jury after special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis presented the evidence.
Baldwin has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 18 months if he is convicted. However, a trial date has not yet been set.
Video footage obtained exclusively by NBC News in November showcased Baldwin handling prop guns and interacting with the film crew during the production of "Rust." The videos, totaling about seven minutes, showed Baldwin preparing for scenes, firing the prop guns, and engaging in character-related activities. In two of the videos, he raised concerns about crew safety and attempted to rearrange members accordingly. The shooting tragedy occurred after two weeks of filming, prompting the shutdown of production.
Before the announcement of the grand jury indictment, discussions had taken place between Baldwin and the special prosecutors regarding a possible plea deal. However, the plea deal was ultimately withdrawn in the days leading up to the decision to present the case before the grand jury.
It is worth noting that earlier this year in April, the same New Mexico prosecutors had initially dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin. However, this recent grand jury indictment marks a significant turn of events.
Baldwin has maintained his innocence in multiple interviews with ABC News and CNN, asserting that he did not pull the trigger, and the gun had been declared "cold" with no live ammunition by assistant director Dave Halls. Halls had previously pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon, receiving six months of unsupervised probation as his sentence.
Meanwhile, the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter last year, is scheduled to begin her trial on February 21. Gutierrez-Reed has pleaded not guilty, and her case also remains unresolved.
The upcoming trial, which will determine Baldwin's culpability in the death of Halyna Hutchins, is sure to draw significant attention as the legal proceedings unfold in the near future.
