According to court documents filed on Friday in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Alec Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie "Rust." These charges are a result of new evidence that has come to light since the earlier charges against Baldwin were dropped in April.
Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey filed the felony charges based on additional testimony given to the grand jury by seven witnesses listed in the indictment. Prosecutors had previously announced in October their intention to seek re-charging Baldwin after calling for a grand jury to consider new evidence relating to the fatal shooting.
The incident occurred on October 21, 2021, during a rehearsal when Baldwin, who was also a co-producer of the film, was pointing a gun towards Hutchins and the firearm discharged, fatally injuring her. Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the shooting. Baldwin has maintained that he was told the gun was unloaded and that he did not intentionally pull the trigger.
Baldwin's attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro of Quinn Emanuel, issued a statement on Friday saying, "We look forward to our day in court." Meanwhile, the armorer on set, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was also charged with manslaughter in January 2023, is scheduled to go to trial in February.
The decision to drop the charges against Baldwin in April was not a declaration of his innocence, according to prosecutors. They stated that the charges could be refiled in the future. However, Friday's charges were brought forth after prosecutors received new analysis of the weapon from ballistics and forensic testing experts.
In addition to the criminal charges, Baldwin and other producers of "Rust" are currently facing multiple civil lawsuits related to the shooting. The exact details and progress of these civil cases were not mentioned in the provided information.
The stage is now set for Alec Baldwin to face the legal consequences in court as he faces involuntary manslaughter charges in connection to the tragic shooting on the set of "Rust."
