Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Announces Shortlists for the 96th Annual Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the shortlists for 10 categories for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards. These categories include Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.
In the Documentary Feature Film category, fifteen films have advanced from a pool of 167 eligible films. The shortlist and eventual nominees will be determined through voting by members of the Documentary Branch.
Similarly, in the Documentary Short Film category, fifteen films have made the shortlist out of 114 qualified entries. The Documentary Branch members will again vote to determine the final nominees.
In the International Feature Film category, fifteen films have advanced to the next round from a pool of eligible entries from 88 countries and regions. The voting process involves members from all branches who meet specific viewing requirements.
Ten films have secured a place in the Makeup and Hairstyling category. All members of the Academy's Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will have the opportunity to view excerpts and interviews with the artists before voting to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
In the Original Score category, fifteen scores have made it to the next round out of 148 eligible entries. Members of the Music Branch will vote to determine the nominees and eventual winner.
Similarly, in the Original Song category, fifteen songs have advanced from 94 eligible entries. The Music Branch members will vote to determine the final nominees.
Ninety-three films have qualified in the Animated Short Film category, with fifteen films making it to the shortlist through voting by members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch.
For the Live Action Short Film category, fifteen films have advanced from a pool of 187 qualified entries. For the first time, all Academy members from various branches were invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting.
Ten films have remained in contention in the Sound category. Excerpts from each shortlisted film will be presented to eligible Sound Branch members for voting.
Similarly, ten films have made the shortlist in the Visual Effects category, as determined by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee. Visual Effects Branch members will have the opportunity to view excerpts and interviews with the artists before voting for the final nominees.
Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23, 2024, following the nominations voting period from January 11 to January 16, 2024. The prestigious awards ceremony will take place on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be broadcasted live on ABC in over 200 territories worldwide.
